Promotional Seeds – How It Started

Keith Lewis has been at Thompson & Morgan for 17 years and was instrumental in founding the promotional seeds account. He had this to say about how he helped in the inauguration.

“Thompson & Morgan has been supplying packets of seed by mail order to gardeners throughout the world since 1855. It has grown to be the UK’s largest mail order horticultural company with hundreds of thousands of delighted customers each year from over 180 different countries. Having worked with the major gardening magazines for many years providing offers to their readers and packets of seeds for promotional magazine cover-mounts we decided about 14 years ago to offer our promotional packet expertise to a wider variety of clients.

We realised that the exceptional high quality and value of the product together with its wide ranging suitability for almost any application (as a giveway, or a stick on product, or within or as a standalone mailing piece etc) made it a suitable product for almost any promotional initiative. Our long horticultural heritage, famous brand name, wide experience with seeds, first class customer service and our modern and flexible production processes should make us the No 1 stop for anybody considering using packet seeds for a promotional idea.

We therefore set up a dedicated department to service this type of customer. To start with it was very much a case of educating potential clients about the ease and value of packets of seed for a wide range of promotional uses. We achieved this in the early days by attending trade fairs for promotional products and had some great successes utilising packets of seed as business cards and giveaways. Seeing is believing after all. Nowadays most of our business comes from word of mouth from satisfied customers or from google searches on the Internet.
